AYVA

Is it over? It must be because I’m dreaming about him again. Except this time, he’s come to rescue me. Just when I’m about to give up. I hope I never wake up because then I’ll be forced to admit he isn’t real. It’s not like some stranger is going to show up to rescue me, then sweep me off of my feet and carry me out into the sunshine where we get a happily ever after. If I wasn’t so fucking exhausted, I’d snort at the ridiculousness of it all.

“Ayva, baby. I’m going to lift you and I want you to wrap yourself around me so I don’t hurt your back, okay?”

I frown up at the amazing blue eyes of my dream man. “But, what’s wrong with this bed right here?” He wants to go somewhere else before we have sex? Is he crazy? I might wake up at any moment!

He cups my face in his hands and his sapphire pools are turbulent as he gazes down at me. “Ayva, this isn’t a dream,” he insists. I’m about to argue when he shakes his head vehemently and shoots a nervous glance at the door. “We don’t have time for this. I need you to trust me, baby,” he pleads. “Please?”

It’s the worst time in the history of the universe, but I can’t help it, I motherfucking swoon. “Okay,” I nod and loop my arms around his neck. He slips his hands under my ass and lifts, so I can wrap myself around him. He’s huge compared to my small frame and he holds my like I weigh nothing. With his arms cradled around me, I can’t ever remember feeling so safe. “Hold tight, baby.”

I tuck my face into his neck and breathe deeply, the familiar woodsy scent filling my lungs. He’s moving quickly, but I don’t pay attention to anything, choosing to stay locked in my little cocoon for as long as I can. Even when I’m sure we’re outside and I hear the sounds of a commotion behind me, I don’t move from my spot.

My dream man calls out to someone but he doesn’t stop moving, he picks up his speed and starts running. I hear footsteps behind us and I can’t keep my head buried in the sand any longer. I peek out behind him and see a man and a woman close behind us. They are pale and blonde, like me and my rescuer. Wow. This is a very strange dream. Looking past them, I see another pair (who also look like us…), but they are standing, facing away from us and—and—I blink a couple of times—nope, I still see it—uh, yeah—this is definitely a dream. The trees in front of them are growing, weaving together to create a thick barrier around the border of the yard.

I hear a loud crack and a muttered, “Fuck!” We stumble for a second before my dream man gets steady footing again. He looks to the right, in the direction
