“We ran into her at the park this morning.” He mocked me with his grin.

“Damn. She told you everything?” I asked Emily more so than Jake.

“She told us everything!” The mocking started with Jake, continued with Emily in the form of a giggle, then three little ones “ha ha ha’d” at me—literally.

“What do I do?” This time, I faced Jake.

“My turn?” he asked his wife.

She consented with a nod and I was taken from the kitchen to Jake’s office with all the kids waving bye-bye.
