CHAPTER 4

CALLIE

I pull up to the small brick house and grip the wheel tightly. I’m a day late meeting my birth father, but it couldn’t be avoided. After I got to the hotel early yesterday morning, I ended up falling onto the bed and sleeping most of the day. By the time I showered, ate, and went to the station to give my statement, it was too late to bother coming. I think Damon was disappointed, but when I told him what had happened, he understood.

Thank God they didn’t book me with anything. I got a firm warning but walked out of the station free.

Officer Trent has been on my mind, more often than I would like. I’ve relived our brief time together and have had to rub one out more than once thinking about the way he fucked me. I haven’t heard from him, but I didn’t really expect to. As much as I would have liked a repeat, I think our encounter has to be chalked up to a scorchingly hot experience that will feature in my dreams for years to come.

Flicking the visor down, I check my makeup, ensuring I don’t have any clumps of mascara or lipstick on my teeth. Luckily, most of the swelling on my forehead has gone down and covered nicely with some foundation. I take a deep breath, grab my purse, and exit the car.

Each step up the driveway feels as if I’m walking through quicksand. I finally reach the door but hesitate before knocking. What if we don’t get along? What if he’s a horrible person? Do I really want to do this?

Shaking out my shoulders, I push down the anxiety and knock on the door. I bite my lip when footsteps sound from inside. And then the door is open, and I’m looking into identical eyes. My vision blurs as I’m drawn into a tight hug, and I suck in air to prevent myself from sobbing.

Damon steps back, holding on to my shoulders as he takes a look at me. “You’re all grown up,” he says, his voice thick with emotion. “God, you were so tiny the last time I saw you.” I laugh shakily, my nervousness growing. These feelings are too big, too messy, and make me feel unbalanced.

“Come in, I have a surprise for you.” He leads me through the house. I glance curiously into the rooms we pass, but he leads me to the back door before stopping. “I hope you don’t mind, but the rest of your family wanted to meet you.”

My eyes widen, and he huffs a laugh. “Don’t worry, they won’t bite.”

Swallowing thickly, I nod, and he throws open the door. A chorus of voices shouts, “Surprise!” The tree-lined backyard is filled with people. Small children run around playing tag while the spicy scent of barbecue drifts through the air. My eyes well up again, and Damon takes my hand, leading me out onto the large patio.

Everyone rushes forward to hug me and introduce themselves.
