Mark-making

Cross-contours

Contour drawings focus on the physical edges and horizons of the body whereas cross-contours are marks which describe the topography of the surfaces in between, bridging the gap between one contour and another. Contour drawings tell us about an object’s shape, where cross-contours give that shape volume; like the concentric lines on a map that describe elevation, they are drawn indicators of form. For example, where a simple outline might describe the shape of a bending figure with an arm outstretched (A), it provides limited information about the pose. You can clarify the form by adding cross-contours, making the same outline face away from you (B) or towards you (C).
