Myer entered the diner and removed her dark shades. The place was full since it was noon, and the smell of steak and fried onions hung in the air. She was aware of everyone’s eyes on her as she moved toward the only vacant booth in the room. An elderly woman in a neat uniform and crisp white apron approached the table. She had the same wary look in her eyes as everyone else in there.

We, small-towners, don’t trust slick city types. She had heard that from one old man when she visited a similar small town a few years back to enquire about a ranch that was up for sale. He elaborated on how city folk brought instability to their small, tight-knit communities with their big ideas and unsavory influences.

“Hi. What shall I get you?”

She didn’t look at the menu as she ordered. “Coffee, black. Steak and potatoes, no onions.”

The woman smiled. “Coming right up.”

That ought to break the ice a little. They may not trust her but at least she ate like them. She looked out the window into the street. It was the kind of town that people simply drove through only stopping to get gas. How did Gillian end up here? The town wasn’t too far from the city—about a four-hour drive—and her men had combed this part of the country. She must’ve been moving around and only settled here to give birth. Myer felt a familiar burning behind her eyes and blinked.

Myer doubted she would ever forgive herself for the role she played, that saw Gillian giving birth to their child far from home and alone. Maybe not entirely alone. Aritica hadn’t been very forthcoming on who Gillian’s protectors were but it didn’t matter. She planned on relieving them of their duties when she arrived at the cabin. Her mate and child were her responsibility.

Really? Your mate and child? Her inner voice sounded derisive.

“Your coffee. How would you like your steak?”

“Thank you. Rare.”

“Is there really any other way to have it,” the waitress joked as she smiled again. “I’ll bring it over once it’s done.”

She sipped her coffee as she thought of what had transpired early that morning. Her fainting spell was concerning. The headaches she could handle, but collapsing in boardrooms or during a meeting with other Alphas could be devastating. The time had come for her to see a doctor. With an heir to protect, she needed to be in good health.

An heir.

Her chest puffed out unconsciously and she almost laughed at herself for her ridiculousness. It killed her to keep the news to herself. But she wasn’t sure whom she could trust. She hadn’t even thought of telling Gillian’s parents about the baby. Mainly because it wasn’t her place to do so and also because she wasn’t sure what kind of reception she would get from Gillian.

A car drove by and she frowned as she followed it with her eyes. It not only was the second time that it had driven past the diner, but she could also swear she had seen it on the road a couple of times too.
