win, side by side. Except the world had changed. And that was something Charlie couldn’t hide from. Their humor subsided and Blane wiped his eyes.
“Shit, man. It’s good to laugh.”
“Yeah.” Charlie nodded. “Yeah, it is.” Shaking his head, he turned toward the stairs and the waiting lift. “I’ll go and organize torching the block. It’ll take a while to get going and we’ll want it blazing before dark. Those fuckers are still braver at night. And they’re not exactly shy in the daytime.”
As if to emphasize his point a rattle of gunfire sounded somewhere beneath them, followed by a shout and then more gunshots. When the air fell silent, the atmosphere had changed. Charlie’s legs felt heavy as he climbed the steps.
“Hey.”
Charlie turned. Blane was reclining once again against the sofa, languid as a dozing lion whose flicking tail was the only small sign of danger. He peered up from under hooded lids.
“You won’t try to leave me, will you Charlie?”
“I told you no, Blane. You trust me?”
“Yeah, I trust you.” Blane watched him until Charlie
felt the skin on his face crawl. “But I wouldn’t let you leave anyway, Charlie.” He sniffed. “Just so you know.”
Charlie shrugged. “Well, now I know.”
Blane nodded.
“So can I fuck off now and get on with your business,
your highness?” Charlie’s tone was light and even, no hint of the tension that ate into his shoulders in its steady rhythm.
“Yeah. And make sure when you come back you pick the best of these flats. I want you close by Charlie. Where I can get you fast if I need you.”
“I’m on it.”
It was only when the elevator pinged and the doors slid shut, working perfectly as if no one had bothered to point out that the world was truly fucked up, that Charlie finally let out a long breath. He thought about hitting the alarm button and freezing the machine just to have a quiet cigarette in peace. He didn’t of course. Not only because Blane would go fucking mental at him, but also because he had a sneaky suspicion that if the lift got stuck it would take them a very long time to get him out. Maybe he’d start taking the stairs.
