BARRETT

I feel as if I could run out and fly a kite without a care in the world from how happy I feel today. The sweet scent that is wholly Marigold clings to my skin and leaves my stomach a flutter with hope. I can’t help but think about how responsive her body is to mine. We barely know each other, but the way we’re pulled together is a symphony in the making. Each knowing exactly what the other craves and delivering it. I can’t wait to lock her up in my room and have her panting my name.

She insisted on giving Ellen a reprieve and has been entertaining the children all day. They have taken to her so easily, giggling at her stories, and falling asleep easily from her songs. Even Ellen seems to be in a better mood when she’s around. I caught her humming a happy tune as she dusted a pile of cobwebs from the staircase’s spindles.

For the first time in months, I enter the office and ring up my business partner, Nigel. After the operator patches me through, his deep gruff voice crackles over the line.

“Barrett Blackford, is that really you? I thought you’d never crawl out of your gloom, old chap.”

“Yes, well. You know. Times have been rather different as of late. I’d like to come by the office, get a run-down of what I’ve missed.”

“Why don’t you come in around noon? We can catch you up on the handlings… and bring an umbrella with you. It’s champagne weather out there.” I glance out the window and notice the torrential downpour pelting against the windowpane.

“I’ll be there.” Hanging up the receiver, I catch a shadow move past the door and then back again. Frowning, I carefully remove myself from behind the desk and peek into the hallway. Spying Ms. Peppins creeping near the back door has me curious.

“What the devil are you doing?”

Marigold lets out a shriek and clutches her hand to her heart. She’s a vision, all pink cheeks and luscious curves. Her blue eyes look bright as they widen upon seeing me.

“You gave me such a fright, Barrett. I was only fetching this for Sarah.” I hear a faint snap and then see her produce a bottle from behind her back.

“From back here? The kitchen is that way.” What was this intoxicating woman up to?

“Yes, well, I wanted to see the back garden area for the children to play in.”

“In this weather?” My eyebrows raise as I watch her smile falter.

“Obviously not for right now.”

I let out a laugh and grab onto her arms, bringing her body into mine and spinning her up against the wall. “You look absolutely devasting when you’re flustered. I’d like to see more of that tonight.” I drag my finger across her collarbone. “You get the prettiest shade of pink right here.”

Her breath stutters as her eyes lock onto mine. “Tonight.”

“Yes, my darling. I want those perfect lips of yours screaming my name into oblivion while you wrap your thighs around me.
