CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO

“Aren’t you cold?” Maya asks while we continue riding behind Iolas.

The sun is about to rise and I tighten the grip on my reins to stay calm. With a sigh, I turn to Maya. “Not really, just very wet. I’m trying to dry myself while heating up, but the snow makes it extremely hard.”

“Ah, that is why I see a damp fog floating around you,” she chuckles. “I was wondering what that was.”

“One of the perks of having fire at your disposal,” I say while raising my shoulders.

“It’s fascinating to see you use your powers. I think because I rarely leave Fiora, I forget there is a whole world out there.” She looks around, chin lifted as if her fear of the outside world is fading slowly, and the beauty of it is starting to pierce through. “We have many different kinds in our land, but the agamori is just one that isn’t discussed often. If it wasn’t for Hambel, I think I would forget about your kind altogether.”

She finally looks back at me, worry across her face. “I didn’t mean it like that.”

“Please don’t worry,” I say, with a scoff. “I didn’t even know fae, elf, or agamori existed for most of my life.”

She smiles and lets out a sigh of relief.

“I do have one question,” I say.

I actually have a million, but I don’t think there is time for that.

“Why is Hambel in Fiora?”

A small smile forms on her face. “Well, Queen Syra has a… thing for him.”

She chuckles, and I can’t help but let one out myself.

I open my mouth to speak again, but before I can, the snowfall dies down, drawing my eyes towards the huge wall in front of us.

It looks like it is made of stone, but most of it is covered in snow, so it is hard to tell. I can’t believe we walked all the way here without being able to see it.

“Is that the shadow wall?” I ask Iolas.

He only nods my way.

“Look, it’s opening,” Maya says while pointing at the left side of the wall.

From between the wall, a huge black shape is coming towards us. My eyes widen as I can finally tell what it is. An army. Full of large, broad men holding axes, hammers and swords. They all are dressed in thick, brown tops and bottoms. A chill goes through me when I see it is animal skin they are wearing. In its purest form.

They march towards us, almost humming something. We dismount from our horses and stay put, taking in the huge crowd coming towards us.

“Did either of you know he would bring an army?”

“Yes,” Maya and Iolas answer in harmony.

Iolas continues. “He wants to come off as strong. Maybe even intimidate you. It does not change the fact that he wants something from you. So I doubt he will use them to harm you.”

“I just hope he leaves us unharmed,” Maya says with a weary smile.

They knew the risk and still went with me. My heart warms at the same time my stomach twists.
