Fatty Liver Symptoms and Treatment
Fatty liver isnât something you hear people talk about every day. However, this disease happens to be one of the very most common ailments among Americans; it is estimated that close to one third of people in the United States alone suffer from this condition, most of whom are unaware that they do.
Liver conditions can be difficult to diagnose, since many fatty liver symptoms are similar to those of other conditions.
Fatty Liver Symptoms
The disease becomes a little easier to recognize when you know what youâre looking for and for the millions of people who suffer from it, this is especially good news. Itâs a serious disease, even in its mildest forms since so many of the essential processes in the human body are dependent on healthy liver function.
In its mildest form, fatty liver may not be diagnosed by standard liver function tests; in many cases, the disease is diagnosed because of the many conditions that fatty liver can cause. These health problems include diabetes, obesity, immune disorders and high cholesterol, among others.
While the symptoms listed above may not be apparent to the average person without medical training as being linked to fatty liver, there are some warning signs which everyone should be aware of.
Some of the less obvious symptoms of liver damage which you should be aware of are having a coated tongue, fatigue, headaches, a feeling of being bloated constantly or almost constantly and chronic bad breath.
What to Do About Fatty Liver
Since fatty liver can be a serious condition in itself and lead to many other serious health issues, it makes sense to do what you can to remedy the situation before further liver damage results. See your physician if you suspect that you may be suffering from any type of liver disease.
However, there are also some lifestyles changes which you can make to help improve the situation â these are not meant to be a substitute for expert medical advice or treatment, but they can help.
Avoid Causes of Liver Damage
Everyone knows that alcohol can damage the liver â if you drink, it may be time to give it up. Many prescription and over the counter medications are also damaging to the liver, including over the counter pain relievers, as well as some herbal remedies and homeopathic medications.
If youâre taking any medications or supplements, ask your physician if these are safe to take if you may have fatty liver. If theyâre not or if thereâs any doubt as to their safety, stop taking them if at all possible.
Exercise
Regular exercise is vital to good health, including liver health. Increasing your level of physical activity signals your body that it needs to begin using stored fat as energy â and when it comes to your liver, this means burning the fat stored in the liver itself.
Liver Protecting Supplements
There are some herbal supplements which you can use to support good liver health as well as helping to treat fatty liver symptoms. These herbs include milk thistle, turmeric and ginger, all of which help to detoxify the liver and restore healthy function.
