◆ We all secretly want the women we get involved with to have been virgins before we met them, but the existence of her kids can make it kind of hard to keep that fantasy alive. And the existence of her ex-husband—especially if he wants to be as involved with his kids as you do with yours—makes it impossible.

◆ If he is involved with his kids, you may have a tough time seeing him all the time and hearing what a great guy he is.

◆ If your ex is involved with someone, he’s going to be stepfathering your children. How are you going to react if your ex wants the kids to call him “Daddy”?

◆ Remember that it’s hard for you not to be affected in some way, real or imaginary, by your partner’s ex or by your ex’s new partner. You may wish he’d disappear, but that would only hurt his (or your) kids. And by the way, it’s perfectly normal for you to hate him: Whether or not you’ve met is completely irrelevant.
