Chapter Eight

The Assassin’s Guild

The journey of a thousand miles.

That’s dramatic, but I can only describe the pain my body is feeling from walking for hours through a thick forest with five Fae surrounding me. It’s as exhausting as training during Hell Week at Warrior Academy. The week at the end of each year that determines your strengths, weaknesses, and assesses whether you’re able to move forward or not. You stay up for five days straight.

The only time I was alone on this walk was when I needed to take a piss. Faeslayer and I didn’t talk about what happened between us. He kept close to my side, but remained the silent observer. We will talk about it.

“Are you okay, Your Grace?” Faeslayer whispers in my ear as we take the last break before breaching the outskirts of Klanstia and entering the Assassin’s Guild. The other four Fae are on the perimeter, watching and keeping the scene safe. I look over at Faeslayer and think about all the things I want to know about him. What did our kiss mean to him? Why do I have feelings for this Fae that are stronger than anything I’ve ever felt for someone?

“Have you ever heard of this Guild?” I will avoid talking about these feelings for another day—or two. “I mean, I have never heard of them and when you found out about this, you seemed very… accepting.”

“My job is to protect you. No matter what you do or where you go.”

“Why did you leave me?” He goes silent and looks off into the distance. When I think he’s going to ignore my question, he looks at me before cupping my cheek as he runs a thumb over my lips before leaning forward to claim them.

“A mistake that I intend to rectify for the rest of my life.”

“You can’t say things like that,” I whisper against his lips. “You can’t give me hope.”

He smirks at me. “Since we met, you’ve wanted to know me. Well, know this, I never have and never will lie to you.”

“Careful making promises. Even the most honorable person tells a white lie to protect those they love.”

“Hmm. I knew about the Guild because…” he pauses and unclasps his right bicep guard, rolling up the sleeve to reveal those words I saw when he was in the cage, fear-gleidhidh a’ chomainn.

I trace my finger along the curved sentence to see an intricate shield of knots under it. “This is the symbol for the protector.”

“Keeper of the Guild. That’s what this means. And yes, in sorts, I am a protector. Each of us has a role in the Guild. The main rule is to never talk about it with outsiders.”

“So, no one knows about your other life?”

“Only the people who need to know do.”

“So, you just work as a guard for the Fae King and also live as a secret assassin?”

He shrugs. “When you say it like that, you make it sound easy. When, in fact, it’s not.” He goes silent again and I’m afraid I pushed him too far this time.
