Chapter 19

Murdoch followed Edgar into his shop. She took in the crystals and herbs at a glance and spotted the curtain that separated the private reading room. On the wall to her right was a small selection of books on the paranormal, herbology, and witchcraft.

“What can you tell me about Mirabel?”

Edgar moved around the store straightening items on shelves and rearranging things as he spoke. “Not much. She was well-liked. I can’t think of anyone who would want to harm her.” He sniffed some of the hanging herbs behind the counter. “I can give you a good deal on these, they won’t stay viable much longer. Hmmm. I suppose I’ll have to find my herbs somewhere else now that Mirabel’s crossed over.”

“You’re the second person to mention that Mirabel supplied them with herbs.” She paused but Edgar didn’t say anything. “I understand that Mirabel was teaching your sister Molly about herbs. Can you tell me where I can find Molly? I’d like to talk to her.”

Edgar looked at Murdoch in alarm. “Why? She didn’t have anything to do with Mirabel’s death.”

Murdoch’s face remained expressionless. “I’m talking to everyone who was close to Mirabel. Anyone who knew or came in contact with her might have information vital to my investigation.” She smiled. “They may not even know that what they heard, or saw was important.” She paused. “So, about your sister Molly?”

“Molly’s a free spirit. Sometimes she stays at my place, but she wasn’t there last night. Probably with one of the” his next words were said with disdain “Cerridwen Coven.”

“The Cerridwen Coven?”

Edgar almost smiled. “Yes. Molly fancies herself a witch. She belongs to the local coven. Sometimes she stays with one of the other witches.” He grabbed a sprayer of glass cleaner and wiped down the countertop. “Thankfully she didn’t spend last night at Mirabel’s.”

“Where does she work?”

“Here and there. Like I said, she’s a…”

“Yeah, a free spirit.”

“Although with The Cauldron being shorthanded, Sybil may have called her to come in.”

“What’s her phone number?”

Edgar mentally kicked himself. Damn it! Now Molly’ll be pissed at me for giving a cop her phone number.

“Well, I’m not sure it’s still in service. She’s not really good about keeping up with her bills.”

“Mr. Kerry, you can either give me your sisters phone number or we can go to the station for a more in-depth interview, which could take hours.”

“I have a business to run, and this is my busy season.”

“It’s up to you.”

Edgar grabbed a pad from the shelf under the register, wrote Molly’s phone number down, tore out the page and handed it to Murdoch.

“Thank you, Mr. Kerry. I’m sure we’ll be talking again.” Murdoch started for the door.

“The one you should be talking to is that woman at The Cauldron. That Larissa Carpenter.”

She stopped and turned back to Edgar. “Oh, why is that?”

Edgar smoothed his mustache and pulled himself up to his full five feet eleven inches. “I saw it last night. My hand brushed hers during the card reading. Death and danger are all around that woman.
