“Come on up!” Reggie waved to Doan and gestured for him to join her in the off-leash dog park that was located on the bank overlooking Gone to the Dogs. She had brought Pinch up here so she could sit and review what she’d learned on board the Calliope.

“I’ll be right there.” Doan waved back. “I just need to grab Bailey from my place. I’ve got goodies.” He raised a Dockside Delights bag in the air.

Reggie relaxed on the bench while she waited. The warmth of the late sunshine felt good on her face. Turning over questions from her visit to the Calliope, she wasn’t sure if she had managed to discover anything worth reporting to Stone or not.

Doan was on his way back with Bailey, and Reggie watched their slow progress to the private entrance of the marina. Bailey seemed sluggish and appeared to be having some difficulty moving. Reggie felt heartsick watching him trudge along. Hopefully, the blood samples Doan had taken to Seattle would provide some answers about what was wrong.

When they were finally inside the dog park, Doan removed Bailey’s leash, and Pinch danced around with excitement, giving Bailey encouraging play bows.

“What’s wrong with Pinch’s tail?” Doan asked, taking out a sticky bun and handing it to Reggie. “He’s holding it funny. Did you accidentally shut it in a door or something?”

“No, that look is definitely an ‘or something.’” Reggie laughed, looking at her dog fondly. His tail was held in a downward arc, with the tip pointing straight at the ground. “It’s probably his new way of saying he wants to be chased.”

“Ahh.” Doan nodded his comprehension before swallowing his sticky bun.

“Did you find out anything about what’s wrong with Bailey?” Reggie looked at the beagle who was resting in the grass. He was watching Pinch closely but not showing any inclination to get up and play.

“Nothing conclusive. The blood work all came back showing no trace of any problem, so everyone was puzzled about his lethargy. He doesn’t seem to have gotten into anything he shouldn’t have. While I was there, I got in touch with the DEA’s vet, and they were surprised that Bailey isn’t doing well. He had a complete checkup and worm treatment last month, and everything was fine. They wondered out loud if perhaps someone had deliberately given him something harmful.”

“That’s awful!” Reggie couldn’t bear the thought that someone would try to harm a working dog like Bailey. “What about those dog treats I found in Stone’s vehicle? He told me he thought maybe something was wrong with them.”

“That’s possible. I admit I didn’t think much about the treats after we realized what they were. Did Beau and Major have any adverse reactions after they had some?”

“Not that I saw. As soon as I showed up to let them out of their kennel, they were both running and playing with Pinch, not lethargic like Bailey.” Reggie looked at the beagle who had flopped out flat on the ground.

“That’s a relief.” Doan let out a gusty sigh.
