Chapter 10

BEN

I slammed the door closed. From boyfriend to stranger in a minute! Frustration pulsed in my veins. I walked in circles in my small living area. When I got tired, I went to my bedroom and slumped down on my bed. I shouldn’t have walked out. I lost it. This temper was going to end me. It was ending things for me right now. ‘Things’ that had made me happy.

It hurt to not be able to help her, to be shut out.

I had an inkling that she was having problems at work. She was also worried about her mom. But who was that stranger in there?

She was so good at keeping things bottled up inside her. She kept everything wrapped up inside of her until she burst. It had to be painful, bursting. I growled.

After the past ten nights filled with food and laughter, going back to the quiet nights made my chest hurt. The last couple of months were filled with her. All I thought of was her.

“I can’t stand this.” I ran my hand through my hair. “Great, I’m talking to myself.” When I should be talking to her. I walked out to the hallway, intent on trying to get her to talk to me, but I froze in front of her door. She was probably berating herself in there right now. I shouldn’t just stand here but my voice wouldn’t come out.

My phone beeped. There were seven messages, six came from Garcia and one came from The Heirs’ manager. There was a mix-up in the procurement orders for the soup kitchen project. They needed me to double-check. I sighed and gave Kat’s door one last look. Our talk would have to wait.

I grabbed my hoodie and got ready to go to the restaurant.

“Ben!” Garcia slapped my back in greeting. “You didn’t have to come in! You could have just sent an email or a message.”

“It’s fine,” I said. I didn’t say it out loud but at least while I was working so I couldn’t think about Kat.

“What’s wrong with you?”

“What do you mean?”

“You look like you got slapped by a girl.”

I choked on my own spit and coughed. I felt like I swallowed my tongue. “How the hell did you come to that conclusion?”

Garcia shrugged. “Your face.”

Well, that wasn’t helpful. “I don’t know why I even bother talking with you.”

“I’m right, aren’t I?”

When it came to conversations with Garcia, it was best to stay silent. But Kat’s face kept flashing in my mind. From the looks of Garcia’s smirk, my face showed how upset I was.

“Hah! You’re using work to escape from a lovers’ quarrel. I shouldn’t be sorry. You should be thanking me!” Garcia’s glee radiated off of him, deepening my frown.

The mix-up took half an hour to clear up. I helped out a bit with the kitchen inventory. Garcia noticed I was avoiding going home. He put his hands on my shoulder and led me to the door. “Your work here is done. Thank you! Now go apologize to your girlfriend!” Garcia snickered.
