Bad Time

It never occurred to Kennedy not to break up with someone whose birthday was a few weeks away. Let alone someone who was still actively a part of her life. Shopping for Maya was awkward by itself, but it was compacted by the fact that she had to do it with her father.

Eric insisted Kennedy help him choose a gift for Maya. She couldn’t say no. That would alert him that something was wrong between them. Questions would be raised, questions that didn’t need to be answered. So Kennedy said yes. Despite not wanting to spend hours thinking about Maya and what gifts she would like. She was supposed to be getting over her. This shopping trip was doing the opposite.

After weeks of avoiding Maya and doing her best not to think of her, Maya was back to being a recurring thought in her mind. She had spent those weeks apart from her, settling into the spring semester, texting with Michelle, and reconnecting with Joy. She hadn’t seen that last part coming. But she still had Joy’s number and decided to use it.

What better way was there to get over someone than finding a distraction? Kennedy still believed that she and Joy were only meant to be friends. However, that didn’t mean they couldn’t partake in some friendly banter. It was devious of her to let Maya believe there was something more going on between them, but she was doing her a favor.

Kennedy preferred Maya being angry at her rather than her crying over her. If she thought Kennedy was moving on, then she would too. It was for the best. They couldn’t be together. No point in being hung up over it.

If only Kennedy could convince her brain of that, so it could stop obsessing over her. She was the one who broke things off. She didn’t have the right to play the role of the love-scorned woman pining over their ex. It was her fault they were in this mess.

“Tell me if you see anything that you think Maya would like,” Eric told her when they arrived at their third jewelry store, hoping to find something, anything, that fit Maya’s taste.

“You know I’m not the ambassador of Maya, right? Just because we’re friends doesn’t mean I know what jewelry she likes,” Kennedy responded, her irritation beginning to show.

“I know that, but you’ll have a better idea than I would. I don’t know if you really know this, but this is not my area of expertise.” Eric laughed and gently bumped her shoulder with his. It was supposed to make Kennedy laugh, but all he got out of her was a smirk.

“I’ve been meaning to ask, is everything alright between you two? Something has felt off from what I’ve seen.”

Kennedy was hoping Nicole and Eric hadn’t noticed, but it was becoming glaring that something was up. The girls went from spending most of their free time together to not being able to stand being in the same room together for longer than a minute.
