Eleven

Maddie’s heart fluttered. Would she be stuck here forever? She tried the mirror again, with the same result. What now?

Mrs. Easley. Where had the woman gone? She had to know something. Maddie hurried to the kitchen and found a notepad and pen by the refrigerator. She paused and stared at the appliance. Had this been the same one here in the future? Who could tell? Everything in this house was a hodgepodge of antiques. The rounded edges looked like something from the fifties, but that didn’t mean much.

She grabbed a pen. Best she could do was leave a note. Good thing there’d been an information card in the apartment with the phone number and address along with the landlord’s contact information. She’d always been good with numbers and had memorized the seven digits easily.

After writing a quick note to Mrs. Easley asking the woman to please call her apartment at the first available opportunity, Maddie stepped back outside.

What if Mrs. Easley didn’t find the note? What if she didn’t exist in this time?

No sense scrambling her brain with too many questions. She pulled the door closed behind her and drew several long breaths. She needed to think. Make a plan. Returning to the house and touching the mirror hadn’t sent her back to her time. So what now? Sleeping hadn’t worked either. She’d slept after the dance and hadn’t woken up in the future.

Maybe she really had been sent here permanently. But why? Would something have happened to her in the future? But what would her grandparents think?

What about her mom? Would she care if Maddie never came back?

Maddie pushed the thought away. She couldn’t do anything about her situation anyway. She couldn’t will herself back to the future.

Could she?

Pausing in the rear garden, Maddie glanced around to see if anyone was watching her. Alone, she squeezed her eyes shut and thought like Dorothy.

“There’s no place like home,” she whispered.

She opened her eyes, finding everything the same. As if wishing would work. As if wishing ever worked. If it had, she’d have found a man to share her life with. Or her mother never would have left. Sighing, Maddie latched the gate and rounded the house. Better head back before she missed the bus. The street looked much the same as Maddie remembered, minus a few important houses. Like Nana’s.

Cars passed, many blaring lively jukebox tunes from open windows. The breeze played with her hair as she walked, sending strands across her nose. A sense of loneliness wrapped cold fingers around her heart and squeezed, but she pointedly ignored the feeling.

Drawing herself out of her contemplations about time travel and starting a new life here, her eyes snagged the bus.

Oh no.

She bolted forward, scrambling down the sidewalk. The wheels started to roll, and the driver signaled the vehicle would soon merge into traffic.

Maddie sprinted forward and reached the door just as the two sections folded closed. “Wait!” She pounded on the small window at eye level.

The startled driver paused, blinked, and finally thrust open the door.
