Chapter 9

It was well past dark before they felt that they had traveled enough distance that Zavna would not be able to find them. Koll had taken it upon himself to use wind from his staff to cover up their bootprints in the snow.

They entered the land cave, and with a sigh, Nicai sat down in the far back of the cave where no snow had drifted. Finally, she managed to pay some attention to her sword, caring for it, oiling it, wiping it down.

“Where should we go to now?” Nicai asked.

“I don’t know, but we have to try to stay concealed, not only from the castle but also from Zavna. She’s flying now. She could be anywhere.”

Her stomach churned. “Do you think—”

“I don’t know what to think.”

She breathed heavily. “It was only after she held the stone that—”

“It’s possible that she lied about not being able to fly, about being grounded.”

“Well, it’s not possible for her to lie about being stone. Did you see how my sword just bounced off her hide?”

“Dragon scales are impossibly thick even on a regular dragon. Are you certain you would have pierced Murro with that attack?”

Nicai scowled. “My wind is strong enough. My sword would have been able—”

“How can you be so certain? It’s not as if you’ve had to fight a dragon before.”

She laid her sword on her lap and wearily wiped her hand down her face. “Do you want me to test the might of my sword on your flesh?” she growled.

“Of course not.”

“Then stop. You saw how powerful my wind and water were.”

“Yes, but Zavna… She’s not a typical dragon, is she?”

“What does that have to do with anything?”

He sighed. “I am not trying to fight you, Nicai, but we have no idea what is going on with anything, with the dragons, with the eggs, with Zavna.”

“And she still wouldn’t answer. It had to have happened before, don’t you think? Why else wouldn’t she say? Maybe a human did it somehow, and that’s why she hates humans so much,” Nicai mused aloud.

“Maybe Ryze but he had powers that haven’t been seen before or since, so if it were him, then how can it possibly be happening again?”

“I don’t know!” Nicai threw her arms into the air. “None of this makes any sense.”

After a long pause of silence, she side-eyed Koll. She was starving, but they hadn't seen anything that they could gather or hunt on their trek here. They would need to find a town, or else they wouldn't last much longer.

But she wasn’t going to worry about food right now. Talking about things was helping to keep her hunger at bay, although it also served to frustrate her to no end.

“None of this makes sense. You’re right.” Koll shrugged. “And don’t act as if you are the only one who wants to try to save everyone. I’m trying as hard as you. I fought as hard as you.”

She glanced away. There had been parts of the battle when it had seemed as if he had disappeared.
