Chapter Twelve

“Don’t forget about those papers I sent you,” Rena said as they headed for the door at dusk.

“I won’t forget, Ree,” Ryan assured her. “They’re first up after I finish up my work tomorrow.”

“I need them by one but not later than five.”

“I know,” Ryan said firmly. “You’ve told me already. Have I ever let you down?”

“No, but I know how things are at the bank.”

“Relax,” Ryan told her. “I have a lot on my plate, but I’m not six. I can handle it.”

“Okay. Right.” Ree gave her a quick hug. “Thanks.”

“Not a problem.”

“See you later Amelia,” Ree said as she released Ryan and gave Amelia a hug.

“Thanks for inviting me,” Amelia said quietly.

“Course,” Ree said. “You’re welcome anytime.”

“Thanks.”

“Night guys,” Elise called. “Drive careful.”

“Will do,” Ryan said slipping an arm around Amelia’s waist as they strolled down the walk to the driveway.

Ryan unlocked the door, and Amelia climbed in on her side while Ryan got in on hers. She clicked her seatbelt in place as Amelia did the same.

“I think that went well,” Amelia said.

“The most important people will back me up when I tell Miss Genny we’ve been dating. And Hope will make sure to tell Kailey and it will be all around town that we’ve been secret lovers for a month by this time tomorrow.”

Amelia laughed. “You’re kidding, right?”

“That’s small-town life,” Ryan said and backed out.

Amelia put her hand on Ryan’s thigh, and Ryan glanced at her to find Amelia looking out of the window. Ryan took Amelia’s hand and held it for a moment as she drove, and her hand tingled faintly as if Amelia was drawing energy from her.

If she was, it was an unconscious act.

“I guess it’s going to work out better than I’d hoped and if my mom does turn up there won’t be any doubt in her mind that I’m not interested in Greg.”

“Are you engaged to this guy?”

“No. I would never ask you to—No.”

“Just curious because it would drive home the point if you were cheating on him,” Ryan said.

“I’m not like that,” Amelia said softly. “I might not be happy with the way I’ve allowed my life to be ordered for me, but I’m not that kind of person.”

“Drastic times...”

“I shouldn’t have brought you into it,” Amelia said apologetically. She caressed Ryan’s thigh, and Ryan’s nipples hardened. “It was thoughtless.”

“More like smart,” Ryan said. “You show your mother you’re not interested, and it works if you stand your ground.”

“I plan to,” she responded. “I can’t keep living like this. I’m suffocating and sometimes, it physically hurts to even think of getting out of bed. I just start crying or break out in a cold sweat. I’m furious with myself for being so cowardly.”

“Amelia—”

“No, Ryan. I am a coward. I feel like I should just do it. My sister did it. So, did my brother. They both have decent marriages, kids. They seem happy.”

“Could you be happy with a man?”

“No.”

“Then, that’s the easy way out. It takes courage to stand your ground especially with your parents.
