Reflection: Embrace the Costs of Joining with Your Calling Journey

Do you want to extract something actionable from Henry’s story? Then here are some questions you need to think about:

What is that thing in your life that you aspire to that is akin to writing first-rates songs (your Thing Two dream—see Failure Rule #4)? Have you begun to chase it?

What is the proverbial dog food you need to eat as part of embracing the thrill of your calling journey? If this is your highest cost, are you willing to pay it?

What is the full cost of chasing your Thing Two dream (see Failure Rule #4) in earnest? What is the full cost of not chasing your Thing Two dream? Which one of these costs is most worth bearing?

What is the ice cream job in your life that you cling to so tightly that you’re effectively deaf to the sound of your internal spirit voice? How can you plan to break free from this stranglehold of safety and break into your unsafe calling journey?

Henry bore the cost of joining his calling journey because he believed Failure Rule #2: Nothing Is Safe was obvious. He followed his internal spirit voice, jettisoned any illusions of security, and he got in the van to tour with Black Flag.

Over thirty years later, Henry’s calling journey has unfolded to prove well worth the hard costs of poverty and pain that the early years required. With a resume that boasts countless albums with Black Flag and his own act, Rollins Band, a Grammy for his audio reading of his book Get In The Van, a TV talk show, and acting gigs in movies such as The Chase, Johnny Mnemonic, and Heat, I doubt he has regrets about leaving the ice cream store.

Henry is a soul on fire. He is a soul alive. He followed the directives of his internal spirit voice to chase his calling journey as a creative in music, writing, and acting.

If you’re hesitant to embrace your calling journey’s next step because the cost is clear and scary, take a step back and evaluate what truly carries meaning for you. Reflect on Failure Rule #2’s reality. Know that Nothing Is Safe and that the costs are worth bearing if they allow you to crash into the authenticity of your unique calling journey.

And then remember Henry and know that dog food rules and ice cream are overrated.
