Selkie, my love and I must part.
Please help me heal this broken heart.
Give me strength to find my way,
For with my love I cannot stay.
Let new joy bubble like the oceanâs foam
And let me find my true home.
Selkie, selkie, heal my heart,
For my love and I are worldâs apart.
Hair
Undines are famed for their preternaturally long hair, and in the popular image they are usually depicted combing out beautiful long locks. Very long hair is said to be a mark of the fey, with red hair being especially potent and magickal.
Hair is often used in spells to link the magick with a particular person, and in the past, locks of hair were given to remember the dead or between lovers to strengthen the bond. Faerie folk are said to be recognisable by their hair, which never dries completely and is always left free-flowing.
In witchcraft, hair is a symbol of power and is usually left loose during ritual, unless this would be dangerous, for example in a fire spell. It is said that a woman in labour should leave her hair unbound to âfreeâ the baby and ensure an easy birth, meaning a birth without any complications. I doubt that there is any such thing as a truly easy birth â they donât call it labour for nothing!
Hair can also be used as a tool of transition. Cutting the hair can mark a rite of passage or indicate a new phase of life. This may be the reason many women feel the need for a restyle after the ending of a relationship. This form of voluntary hair loss can be an empowering statement about your personal self-image.
However, hair loss can also come about in less welcome ways, for example as a result of excessive perming or bleaching, because of the condition alopecia or as a consequence of life-saving but invasive chemotherapy treatment. Such hair loss can be traumatic, and it may be difficult to remain positive in the face of it.
Try to see such an event as an opportunity to give yourself a makeover and a new image, using clever haircuts, hair pieces and wigs. Even if you are happy with your own hair, wigs are a great way to experiment with new colours and styles, or to be someone else for a day. If itâs good enough for the celebrities, itâs good enough for you too!
