Laura and I led the way. Laura was obviously full-blooded Elfen, and I looked pretty much Elfen as well, except for my eyes, so we figured they would most readily talk to us. Liesl, Chance, and Renée followed close behind. We stuck together in a tight group once we entered the Elfen village, since it was somewhat crowded.

Rolling fields of healthy grain grew nearby.

“Looks like Gaia’s magic has done some good here,” said Laura.

We soon found a store and entered it.

“Hi there,” said Laura, approaching the wide counter. “Hey, we were wondering about that burned-out hut about a half mile from here? Do you know of it?”

The shopkeeper glanced at us and frowned. He turned away and began wiping the side counter with the rag in his hand.

The second Elfen behind the counter, an older woman, glanced at us.

“Hello,” said Laura, moving to ask her about it. “Do you know the old burned-out shack back there?”

The older woman scowled ferociously and turned to leave to a back room.

“Hey, wait,” called Laura. The woman paid no mind and disappeared.

Laura turned back to the first man. “Sir, please, can you tell us...?”

“No,” the man barked. “I know nothing about that place.” He grimaced and kept scrubbing the same area of countertop.

Chance grabbed a loaf of bread off the nearby shelf and brought it to the counter. “I’d like to buy this,” he said.

The man came forward, his face dark and sullen, and took the bread to wrap in brown paper. “That’ll be three and six.”

Chance reached into his pocket and brought forth the money, and held it out. “Now tell us about the burned-out building.”

The man glared at Chance, took his money, and handed him the paper-wrapped package. “I don’t know nothin’ about that place,” he growled, before turning away to put the money in a box.

Chance reached forward and grabbed the man’s arm as he turned. “I think you do,” he said softly.

The Elfen man slowly turned to Chance, an angry look on his face, “We don’t speak of that place no more. Best you just forget it,” he hissed and jerked his arm from Chance’s grasp.

Lightning fast, Chance reached out and grabbed the man by both his arms. Chance had sprouted up in the last year. He was eighteen years old and was filling out nicely. Although the Elfen man was half a head taller than Chance, it was clear Chance outweighed him by at least forty pounds. Chance’s arms bulged with muscles as he held the man tight.

“Excuse me, sir,” Chance whispered in a dangerous voice. “We’ve been sent by The Oak King himself, and we need answers. Now either you give me information, or I’m going to go into the back room and question the lady.”

The Elfen man’s face blanched, and he grimaced at Chance.

Chance squeezed until his knuckles went white. The man’s arms had to hurt, but he didn’t show any of it. He just put on a sour face as he stared at Chance.

Slowly, the shopkeeper turned his head and spat to the side.
