Chapter Sixteen: He Sends Me

Zack and I hiked hand in hand, which probably wasn’t efficient at all, but we didn’t care. We weren’t in a rush — despite the timer ticking in the back of our minds, we were going to enjoy this day as much as possible. I missed the sunset entirely to watch him instead, because the sunset would still be there tomorrow, but he wouldn’t. After that, the first stop on the Planetary Trail was Mercury, and again I only peeked at it to ensure we could see it and then moved out of his way so he could look into the telescope. “Beautiful, huh?”

He had to stand on his toes to use it the way I had it adjusted, and when he rocked down again, he turned his attention back to me. “It really is. I didn’t even know dark sky parks existed. That’s one nice thing about Idaho, though... you wouldn’t believe the skies. If I drive a couple of hours north of where I live, you can see the northern lights.”

“Maybe you can show me one day?” I said hopefully, interlocking our fingers to take him to see Venus.

“I’d really like that.” He held my hand a little tighter and stepped closer, making it harder to walk in a straight line without bumping him. “So... so you want this to continue? After I leave, I mean?”

“Yeah. I mean, I don’t really know what I’m doing here, but I don’t want to lose this. I know it’ll be different, but... I dunno. I guess I shouldn’t have just called you my boyfriend without asking first but I didn’t want people to downplay you, if that makes sense. This is... something.” I was happy it was dark out and he couldn’t see my stupid blush.

“It is,” he agreed quietly. “I think you’re going to have to drug me and bodily put me on that plane tomorrow, honestly.”

“Don’t say that. I’ll keep you; I don’t care about your job.” I laughed and kissed the top of his head. “I got you first class by the way, I want you comfortable, at least.”

“Thank you, Sir.” His voice was even smaller that time, and we stopped to check out another telescope instead of talking about why. Talking would lead to sadness and sadness would lead to a ruined night, and that was the last thing I wanted.

It was quickly clear though that Zack was losing interest in the sky and starting to get freaked out by how incredibly dark it was around us. Dim red lights guided our path, but other than that, the entire park was pitch-black for what looked like miles. After we checked out the asteroid belt a telescope later, I lifted him off his feet and took a slight right before Jupiter. The planets weren’t going anywhere, but Zack was, and after we left the trail I didn’t set him down until we were hidden from view, then I pressed my bracelet for the light. “It’s just you and me now, baby.
