Chapter 12

Truth Be Told

Howling in earnest, the morning wind rattled against the windows, ready to disperse the lingering summer air. Unfailingly, the breeze seemed to push away the heavy heat of summer each year. It was a time that Aria usually savored; the cool mornings and cozy afternoons of autumn were a comfort that she welcomingly embraced each fall. However, with so much on her mind of late, she’d barely registered the change in the air outside, much less taken a moment to appreciate it. She stood gazing out the window at nothing in particular while she reflected on the past couple weeks.

Immediately following the attacks at Inferno and the loft, Aria and her brothers had deposited Izzy, along with all her questions, on her doorstep before promptly leaving the city behind. It had seemed like too much to try to deal with her in that moment. Also, the group agreed that placing temporary distance between themselves and Izzy was far safer for her for a time. Confident in the safety of her home situation, they’d rushed back to the estate without hesitation.

Aria had been most anxious to relay the details of the astounding events to Aaron. Upon returning home, however, they’d discovered that Aaron was nowhere to be found. He’d taken his favorite car and slipped away—to where, they hadn’t the slightest idea. It wasn’t out of the ordinary for Aaron to leave for weeks or even months at a time. What was strange about his absence this time, however, was that for the first time, he’d left them no message or any indication as to where he’d gone or when to expect his return.

Aaron’s abrupt absence and the curiosities around it bothered them all gravely. Yet they didn’t speak any of these worries aloud to one another. Aria chose to believe that Aaron would rush home as soon as he received their messages. Why he hadn’t received them yet, she couldn’t wrap her head around.

Questions swarmed her mind, coming at her from every direction and all at once. She curiously pondered Aaron’s disappearance, her final heart-wrenching interactions with Blaze, and more darkly, who’d sent the demons to attack her. What could they have gained from the attacks? If they were successful, was their goal to end her completely? Efforts to come up with reasons for the attack continued to be fruitless, as the more she thought, the more baffled she became.

Aria knew that she posed no real threat to anyone or anything. That much felt abundantly clear to her—especially since she’d barely escaped with her life, and only by pure luck. She continued impatiently waiting to discover if she possessed any abilities that were extraterrestrial in nature. Of course, there wouldn’t have been a better time for her abilities to reveal themselves than that evening in the loft. Alas, Aria remained completely normal.

Despite the fact that there was so much to talk about, the trio of siblings seemed too preoccupied with their own tasks for much conversation. While Aria remained in the main house, she wasn’t technically alone.
