Defining Boundaries

Once a defining boundary has been crossed, the person is forever changed.

A moment ago, we sidestepped the issue that you are, in some sense, a different person if you violate a defining boundary. If you had a defining boundary that you wouldn’t steal, and the circumstances forced you into a position where you did steal, it would cause a change in your personality.

The short-term impact of that situation might cause depression, anger, frustration, or a host of disruptive emotions. The longer-term impact is that you will become a different person. However, this is not to say that you have multiple selves; rather, your “self” changed. One could argue that this is like a state of matter change—like water turning to ice. You, for instance, changed only for the time where the circumstances drove you outside of your boundaries. However, in our experience, once a defining boundary has been crossed, the person is forever changed. A better analogy would be the change that happens when you fry an egg. It changed from a liquid to a solid permanently. It’s not to say that the boundary might not be reestablished, but there will be a part of you that is forever changed by the experience.
