This exercise works best in a three-hour session. Films (videos) average ½ to 2 hours in length, leaving approximately one hour for introducing the exercise, conducting the pair discussions, and discussing the results as a group. An alternative to showing the film in class is to put it on reserve in the media center and require that students view the film by a given date, leaving only the pair discussions and group debriefing for class time. Another way to break up the time required for showing a two-hour film is to show the first half of the film at the end of one class session, and then show the second half at the beginning of the next class. This method allows more time for discussion and debriefing after the film. Students also can be encouraged to answer some of the questions posed at the beginning of the film during the time between viewing the two parts.
