The chief said there were three girls. The person1 who learns their names will get the girls. Spider got up, he went … Spider got up and went to the chief’s house where there was a guava tree. Spider got up and went … he went to climb to the top of the guava tree. He plucked the first fruit and threw it to the ground. The eldest one picked it up. The eldest one’s name was Wayawuie.2 He plucked the second fruit and threw it on the ground. He heard someone say that Nukunukui should go and pick it up. He plucked the third fruit and threw it on the ground. They said Gbamilo should go pick it up. Spider said, “Now I know your names.”

Spider went home. At dusk he would go call the girls by their names. By the time dusk fell, however, his jaw was swollen. So he went to tell his plight to his cousin, the Lizard.3

Lizard went.4 … All the people came and were calling the girls’ names until they could call no more. Then Lizard came and struck up a tune:

(Song:)

It is asked, Wayawuie, Nukunukui, Gbamilo,
