The original goat pentagram, which first appeared in the book La Clef de la Magie Noire by French occultist Stanislas de Guaita, in 1897.

“I can’t explain it,” said her grandmother, “but last week I was reading one of my books and came to a part about the pentagram. Suddenly all I could think about was the board in the hallway and I was . . . I was pushed to go and rip it out of the wall.”

Ashley looked closer and now could see that the board wasn’t firmly attached to the wall, little jagged pieces of plasterboard around the edges giving away its loose setting. “Go ahead, take it off,” her grandmother urged. Ashley took hold of the board and pulled it away from the wall. She was surprised to see a space behind it, and inside the space two objects. She reached in and pulled them out. She felt herself turn cold as she looked at what had been hidden in that secret compartment: an old, rusted pentagram amulet and a copy of the Satanic Bible. Revulsion overcoming her, Ashley dropped the objects on the floor and raced out of the house.

After taking time to catch her breath and clear her thoughts, Ashley went back inside and confronted her grandmother about the finding. Her grandmother assured her that she hadn’t put those things there; they must have been stashed away by previous tenants. This made sense to Ashley, as both the amulet and the book looked extremely worn with age. Nonetheless, she strongly urged her grandmother to get rid of them—and all her personal occult belongings—in an effort to cleanse the house of whatever evil was in it. To Ashley’s shock, her grandmother agreed.

About a week passed with no strange occurrences, giving Ashley hope that by getting rid of the occult paraphernalia they had also gotten rid of whatever had been “haunting” them. But that, unfortunately, turned out not to be the case.

The disturbing events that had bothered them before now came back with a vengeance. It started again when Ashley’s grandmother went to take a shower on one particularly cold night. Though the furnace was working fine, there was an unfathomable cold inside that chilled the women to their bones. A hot shower sounded like a great idea to Ashley too, and she waited in the kitchen for her turn. A few minutes later, her grandmother came downstairs in her robe, her hair tied up in a towel. She was trying to talk, but her words came out hoarse and broken. She finally managed to say that something had tightened around her throat, strangling her. It was all she could do to break away before she couldn’t breathe anymore. Ashley looked on in shock at the red imprints on her grandmother’s throat. Imprints that looked exactly like fingerprints. She begged her grandmother to leave the house immediately, but her grandmother said that was going too far. She may have given up her witchcraft things, but she wasn’t going to let anyone or anything make her move out of her own home.
