Forty jugs of water. At first that’s all it was.

“Can you boys help me with this?” Mom called from the garage. Her voice was strained. Chris and I jumped up from the living room couches and ran through the kitchen. Mom was back from her “Sunday time,” and at her feet sat four plump water jugs.

“I need some strong boys to help me,” she said, a little out of breath.

“Phillip is a weak boy,” Chris said, laughing. I punched him, not too hard. We both took one jug in each hand, then we waddled into the kitchen and plopped the jugs on the counter.

“You can just leave the others on the floor for now, guys,” Mom said. “We’re putting them down in the basement.”

“Why?” Chris said.

“Let’s get all of them in here first, and then I’ll give you the scoop.”

When we’d finished and Mom had closed the minivan’s back hatch, Dad popped his head into the garage. “Need some help?”

As a family we brought all forty jugs down to the basement and arranged them in a tight six-by-six square with a four-jug expansion on the side. When we finally finished, Dad didn’t even ask the obvious question.

“So,” he said, “how was …?” He circled his hand in the air like he couldn’t remember the word “church.”

“Very nice,” Mom said.

We all stood there, looking at our neat little creation.

“Mom,” Chris said finally.

“I know,” Mom said, rubbing Chris’s shoulder. “I just want us to be prepared for any kind of minor emergency where we need to have water on hand. We’re very vulnerable when it comes to droughts, not to mention power outages. So I thought we could keep this down here. Just in case.”

Dad nodded vigorously. “Sounds good. Smart thinking.” He poked a finger at her head. Mom smiled and batted his hand away.

I couldn’t imagine us ever being in a situation where we’d need to drink from jugs we kept in our basement. And if we were that desperate for water, would forty jugs be enough?

Mom was planning for a catastrophe, but I felt relief. It meant she planned on staying with us.
