After three days on the road and being cramped up in this truck, we were finally less than an hour away from LA.
Leaving the casino two hundred dollars richer, weâd stopped for food once more and hit the road. Iâd tried to give West his original thousand dollars back but heâd refused to take it, telling me Iâd earned it after losing almost seven hundred of it before going on a lucky streak where Iâd won it all back plus more.
After too many hours to count, I was eager as hell to get this driving, well in my case, riding shit over with. But, the closer we got to our destination, the more bittersweet it felt.
On one hand, I was excited to see my family and celebrate with Noelle and Kalvin at their upcoming nuptials tomorrow.
But despite all that and my irritation with sitting on my ass so many hours a day, I wasnât ready for it to be over. I wasnât ready for my time with him to be over. Weâd spent so much time of the trip at odds that finally getting him to warm up to me felt like a monumental achievement and I feared that the progress weâd made⦠that the way weâd connected during this trip would be forgotten the second we arrived.
Though I enjoyed our banter, having West be civil with me, having him actually talk to me was what I enjoyed the most.
I didnât want to go back to having him hate me or at the very least, treating me like I annoyed the shit out of him.
Who Iâd thought he was and who heâd shown himself to be were completely different and I wanted to see more of that side of him if heâd let me.
âIâve enjoyed⦠this.â I blurted out before I could stop myself. âRiding with you the past few days. Getting to know you. Itâs been⦠fun.â My lackluster ending sounded cringe even to my own ears. I didn't know how to explain how I felt. Not without coming on too strong. I was upfront, vocal, and bold with my feelings. West was⦠not. So I didnât know what to say to him or how to say it without pushing him away.
The dark shades that covered his face swung towards me and I frowned, hating that I couldnât see his eyes to better gauge his reaction to my words.
Despite the limited view, he assessed me, not saying a word until he faced the road once more. âYou enjoyed riding me, too.â
My mouth flew open as his lips twitched.
âYou are such a dick,â I managed to say through a laugh, smiling harder when he joined in.
It wasnât until our laughter subsided that he spoke again. âIâm glad you emphasized the riding part because you ainât drove shit.â
Again, my mouth parted in offense. âI offered to drive. Multiple times.â
He yawned big, stretching him long arms wide, purposely bumping against the side of my head, smiling when I smacked his hand away.
