Leila’s knuckles hovered an inch away from the Earth Science door. The whole Kiko experience changed everything. What did she know? Kiko asked Mr. Roberston to get proof of her being marked. Then, she came to school just to test it for herself by calling Leila with her fox Guardian. But did either of those facts mean she marked her? And if she did, was she a Fallen? As scary as they all seemed to be, maybe they were truly concerned for her. Plus, if Mr. Robertson wanted to hurt her, he had plenty of opportunity that morning. If Kiko wanted to turn her, she would have pulled her all the way into the forest.

Only one way to find out. Leila pulled her arm back and as she thrust it forward to knock, a smooth palm caught her hand.

“What are you doing?” Riley huffed, dragging her down the corridor.

“I thought that he might give me some answers. If—” Leila stopped when she felt Riley’s grip on her tighten.

He halted mid-stride and huddled her against the wall. “Where the hell have you been?”

He placed his hands on the wall behind her head, boxing her in. His eyes were hooded and deep as he stared down at her. His breaths were short and fast.

“It’s okay, I’m fine,” Leila whispered, trying to placate him. “I was on the phone to my mom. You know she’s a folklore fanatic, I wanted to see what she knew.”

“This stuff isn’t in normal folklore. I told you that the mainstream has diluted, manufactured, embellished and separated the truth,” he hissed back.

Riley had upped his game since morning. He’d gone from endearing and bossy to downright hysterical. Leila decidedly did not like it.

“Well, it was mainstream enough in that book in the library, so why wouldn’t she know about it?” She ducked underneath one of his arms and stepped out of his barricade. She marched down the hall towards the art studio. “I have to get to class.”

Riley frowned, following her along. “And what did she say?”

“She didn’t know anything.”

Riley raised his arms to the heavens. “You’re driving me crazy, Leila. I thought we made a deal to stay together. You were being turned on the roof for all I knew. Keep me in the loop from now on. Tell me where you are at all times.”

Stopping outside the art studio entrance, Leila held onto the door frame. He was right, and she hated it. She’d been taken all the way to the edge of the forest by Kiko against her will. Next time, she might not be so lucky. Knowing that sort of thing could happen at any moment was disconcerting to say the least. Worse still, it could happen when he was nearby and he could get hurt in the process.

She felt his eyes bore into her as she looked over her shoulder and said, “I’ll see you in biology.”

“Wait!” That wasn’t the end of it for Riley. He followed her into the room. Students were hunched over tables working away on clay sculptures.
