After geography, I have language arts. I like reading more than Ryan does, which makes no sense because Ryan gets all the cool picture books, like Dr. Seuss.

I’m also learning cursive writing, but they only teach capital letters the first year. UNLESS YOU LIKE SHOUTING ALL THE TIME, THAT MAKES NO SENSE!

I asked Dad what he remembers about language arts, but he said he doesn’t remember much. He says you mostly tend to remember the really terrible things that happen to you—like math.

“Math is torture,” says Dad. “As soon as you understand how anything works, you’re expected to do something on top of that . . . and then on top of that again, never ending.”

It must be lonely being a great mathematician, sort of like speaking a language that nobody understands. But Dad says you need math to know whether to buy a large pizza for $14.99 or two smalls for $7.99 each. He says you should calculate the price per square inch, but how’s that work when you throw out the crust?
