KAREL

Maybe Matej has been right all along. I finally understand why he went to Alzbeta first. He guessed she would know; she would have perhaps sensed something was wrong. I needed to see it for myself. I did. I’m sure of it now.

I pick up my phone.

Karel: Matej, dude, I think you were onto something. I believe you now. Please get back to me ASAP!

Chapter 15

OLIWIA

I knew the moment I heard the screaming at the other side of the playground it was Lucija. I thought it was her. I thought she was gone, not Marieke. Ingvild and I ran as fast as we could with the two policemen right behind us, but the moment we got to the stairwell, we knew it was too late.

God, the blood. I don’t think I’ve ever seen that much blood, not in real life anyway. All the other kids started screaming and running away as fast as they could. They didn’t want to be anywhere near us. I can hardly blame them.

I remember Ingvild looking at me and whispering, “It’s Marieke. It doesn’t make sense. The pattern. MIOL. It doesn’t make sense, Liv.”

I was thinking the same. It’s as if this entire riddle of “who’s next?” has overtaken our lives so much we don’t realise what’s real and what’s not anymore. Marieke, one of my best friends for the past five years, lying there dead in Lucija’s arms. How can anyone even really grasp that? How can you mourn the loss of a friend when you’ve lost two others just days before? When you’re mourning your own life, you’re fearing for your own safety? I wonder what the police will do now. They might put us all in quarantine together in some basement. Actually, I wouldn’t mind that. There’s not much else they could do.
