Identifying the priorities
We . . . will give our attention to prayer and the ministry of the word.
(6:3, 4)
The apostles recognized the tension, both cultural and social, which needed to be resolved. They also recognized the danger that they could become preoccupied with the wrong ministry, so they clearly identified priorities. This is a vital principle for keeping a church on track, as we saw from Romans 14 and 15 (see pp. 71â73). Where do we want to get to? What are the main priorities which should shape the proposed change and the manner in which it should be introduced?
Prayer and the ministry of the Word are essential twin priorities for a healthy and united church. The significance here was not only that this was recognized but also that the apostles saw the need of delegating tasks to ensure that their main priority was protected. Much has been written about this, so it is necessary only to draw attention to the wisdom of leaders who identify priorities and deploy the good gifts of others to ensure that needs are addressed and growing work is well managed.
