Thanks to the Internet and high-speed connectivity, you can now play esports against high-level competition from the comfort of your own home. All you need is Internet connectivity, the right gear (see Chapter 2 for an overview of types of gear you might want and need), a physical space to play in, and all the right accounts. In this chapter, you look at setting up all those accounts as well as explore how you might find people in your local esports scene.

Starting the Process: What You Need

If you’re reading this before reading Chapter 2, I strongly suggest that you go back and read over the information on computers, consoles, and gear there. I'll wait here while you check that out.

Here’s a quick checklist of what you need to begin playing alongside the best:

A computer or consoles: Depending on your chosen game or games, you will need a capable PC or the proper console. You can find help in deciding on those purchases in Chapter 2.

High-speed Internet: For the highest level of play, you want to have your computer or console connected via an Ethernet cable to wherever your Internet service enters your home (usually a modem). Strong Wi-Fi will also work in most cases. You should look for an Internet plan that refers to itself as broadband Internet. With good latency (which, sadly, you can determine only by checking it after you have the service), any service rated as broadband should suffice to play any game at a competitive level. If your latency is high, meaning that it takes more time for your computer to reach the game server, you will suffer a time lag on your keyboard and mouse inputs, and your graphics could skip as your machine tries to compensate.

A table or desk: Depending on your choice between PC and console, you most likely want a desk, but if you expect to play in your living room or to always be in front of a big-screen TV, you’re better served with an entertainment center or a coffee table. You should pick what works best for you, but you want something that can hold all your gear along with a bottle of water or your beverage of choice so that you don’t get dehydrated while you play.

A comfortable, ergonomic chair: Whatever seating option you choose should offer good support and allow for proper posture because you’re likely to spend several hours at a time in your gaming chair. Many excellent options are available from vendors like Dxracer.com, Vertagear.com, and Xrocker.com. Different gamers swear by different chairs, but as you will see on each of those sites, the traditional design is a chair similar to a race car seat, and any chair that follows that basic design will serve you well. Many console players choose to play from a couch, which is also viable, but remember that if you play for long hours on the couch, you should be attentive to how your body is positioned. Your body can tense up in a slouched position while playing, and the resulting stiffness can be problematic.
