Chapter Sixteen

How do you like your cut?” Dani asked.

Ryan took her jacket. The weather had cooled, and the forecast of rain added to the gloom hanging thick and heavy in the air. “It took a little getting used to, but I like it.” She came close and pressed her thigh against her center. “I like it a lot.” Ryan ran her fingers over her cheek and trailed down her throat. “Would you like a drink?”

She didn’t want her senses dulled, but she was nervous and unsure what tonight would bring. “Wine, please. Grigio if you have it.” Of course, Ryan made sure every apartment was fully stocked and she suspected this one would be no different.

“Dani,” Ryan said as she handed her the half-full glass. “If you’re unsure about giving yourself to me you can change your mind.”

“I know.” She took a sip, let it warm her. “I haven’t changed my mind.” She looked around at the décor. Each place she’d been in was different though all were tastefully done. “Why do you have apartments and not just rooms at hotels?” She sat on the leather sofa. The kind you could sink into, in a good way.

Ryan sat in the adjacent chair, her long legs stretched out and crossed at the ankles. “Because the women we service aren’t casual tricks, and neither are the women we employ. I’d never want to cheapen the experience by having either feel as though they were being rented by the hour.” Ryan met her gaze with an acuteness she hadn’t witnessed before, even in bed. “Just because we make money doing what we enjoy, I never want our employees to feel like they’re being pimped out. They deserve accolades for the services they provide. Not many women can handle the stress, and the cost of giving up a personal life isn’t for everyone.”

There was more than just the business aspect at play in Ryan’s words. Dani needed to find the deeper meaning, but for now it was enough to know she wasn’t viewed as someone willing to pay for a quick lay because she was in it for so much more. The wine had relaxed her enough that she was ready to experience another aspect of self-expression and testing her own limits in the physical world. Ryan had promised to take her there. She stood and set her empty glass down.

“Let’s not talk about work anymore.”

Heat flared in Ryan’s eyes before she moved so quickly Dani gasped when she pulled her against her. “Tell me your safe word.”

Dani trembled in Ryan’s grasp, at the hard desire in Ryan’s eyes and the firm grip on her waist. She swallowed and whispered, “Thunder.” She was led to the massive bed covered in a red, gray, and black pattern quilt and black curtains on the windows. The trace lights in the ceiling glowed red. Her feet sank into the thick gray carpet with every step. At first glance, the vibe of this room was ominous, yet when she took a breath, then another and really looked, there was much more.
