The Noche-Buena Gathering and Subsequent Nightmare

Years later, my family and I in exile were at a noche buena gathering at my uncle Jesus’ house in the northwest part of Miami. A distant family friend saw that I would not eat from the cochino (pig) that was cooking on the Cuban-made barbeque. Out of curiosity, he asked my dad and me why this was so. I told him it was a simple story that occurred when I was about 5 or 6 years old. My mother’s brother, named Fidel (don’t like that name…), was holding a noche buena at his house and we were invited. As I walked into his home, it was customary that I would always gravitate to the back yard. When I approached the back door this time, at the threshold, I saw Fidel stabbing a pig in the neck with a long butcher knife and the pig making horrendous loud screeches that I will never forget. I was traumatized for a very long time and always held contempt for Fidel. I knew he was no good; he later became a Fidelista, a dedicated and despicable communist.
