‘Decision-Less Decisions’

According to Becker ‘lock-in’ happens because individuals fail to see the long-term implications of their decisions. Continuity begets continuity. For example, the lawyer who takes a job in one of the least popular areas of law, like mental health, social security and criminal law, because there is no alternative may eventually discover that this seemingly inconsequential decision shapes their entire career. Likewise, the motorist whose first car is a Ford may end up becoming a serial Ford owner because the best trade-in prices are to be had from Ford dealers.

Large organizations also enter into ‘side-bets’. For example, once big projects like the London 2012 Olympics get underway, myriad stakeholders including hoteliers, restaurants and taxi firms invest in anticipation of the games being held – all adding to the pressure to persist with the project.
