Chapter Twelve
Becca raced down the sidewalk, the snow falling in thick, white clumps around her. Her heart ached with each step and tears streamed down her cheeks. Donât you fucking cry, Rebecca Gibbons. A gust of wind sent a chill through her body as it lifted the snowflakes, scattering them into her face. She felt the roughness of her jeans against her skin, like sandpaper, and hugged her coat for warmth. She shivered despite the leather, the icy chill clinging to her flesh. With a blink, the ivory specks on her eyelashes danced away in the breeze.
âThis isnât a good idea. Go back to him.â
She glanced to her right and caught a glimpse of her reflection in the glass windows of the towering office building. The person in the mirror looked at her, their expression conveying a sense of dread and a faint trace of terror. âLeave me alone.â
âListen to me. Turn around. Youâre safest with him.â
She clenched her fists and threw down her bag, her voice a snarl as she glared at the hallucination that wouldnât let her be. âTell me why? Whatâs so fucking special about him, anyway? He was covered in another personâs blood. He killed people because of me. I canât raise a child in that environment. I refuse to live like that.â
âHe isnât your parents. Donât do this.â
She shook her head in disbelief and spun away, trying to ignore the bitter taste that lingered in her throat. The sudden glare of headlights hit her, momentarily disorienting her and wrenching her out of her daydreams. She heard the loud rumble of the engine when it pulled up alongside the curb, causing her to take a step back. Fear caused her heart to stop beating and her already cold hands turned to stone. Did he follow me?
Brandon rolled down the window, giving her a warm, friendly smile. âNeed a lift?â
She shuffled from foot to foot, uncertainty warring with her desire to not walk in the snow. âDid he send you?â
He scoffed and avoided her gaze. âHe just wants to make sure youâre alright. I wonât tell him where I took you, if thatâs what youâre worried about. Heâs my boss, not my dad.â
She laughed as she grasped the cold metal door handle, then slid into the seat. He pulled out into traffic before turning the thermostat up. As warmth slowly seeped into her frozen fingertips and toes, she felt a stabbing sensation. She was torn between the icy chill that made her teeth chatter and the scorching heat that caused her skin to prickle.
âWhere to?â he asked.
Where can I go? If she went to Evelynâs or Jessicaâs, Aedin would discover her instantly, the same with her own apartment. She inhaled deeply and looked out the window at the swirling flakes. Thereâs only one place he wonât find me. âFarley and Hanover. Drop me at the corner.â
Brandon let out a low, melodic whistle. His eyebrows shot up, and he gaped at her in shock and disbelief. âFancy part of town.
