A FIERCE BANGING RATTLED the clinic door, jarring Jonathan from a sound sleep. Rising from his bed, he opened the nearby window and leaned out to see who was there. Below him, he could see a woman, clad only in her dressing gown and clutching a lantern.

He called down to her. “Can I help you, Miss?”

“It’s my neighbor, Martha Pratt. She’s having her babies!” The words tumbled out of her mouth quickly, belying her excitement at delivering the news.

He sighed. It seemed the Pratt twins had decided to come a bit earlier than expected, and in the wee hours of the morning to boot. “Tell her I’ll be around shortly.”

The woman skittered off toward a waiting mare. The lantern fixed to the saddle, she rode off into the night.

Jonathan set about getting dressed. As he fastened his pants, it occurred to him that he would likely need assistance with the Pratt birth. Second births could progress very quickly, and when it was over there would be two babies to contend with. Things would be easier if Naomi came along. He had no idea how she’d react to being awakened at such an hour, but as his nurse, she was charged with assisting him. A small smile touched the corners of his lips as he imagined what she’d look like, all tousled and drowsy.

There wasn’t time to prepare his carriage. A few minutes after being summoned, he tied his horse outside Miss LaRue’s place. Like any other time during the wee hours of any morning except Sunday, the place was still open, and the lamps still lit inside. He knocked on the door, and was greeted silently by the tall, broad man who acted as Miss LaRue’s security.

“Please tell Miss LaRue to fetch Naomi right away. I need her assistance with a birth.”

The big man disappeared inside without a word, as was his way.

Jonathan sat down on the stoop, tapping his foot as he waited for her.

Naomi appeared at the door, clad in a blue gingham dress and brogans. Her hair was bundled at her neck in a messy bun. She rubbed a delicate hand over her half-closed eyes. “Miss LaRue said somebody’s having a baby?”

He stood. “Yes. We must get there right away. It’s twins and they’re making their debut soon.” Even as he spoke, he couldn’t help staring into her face. Was this how she would look after a night of passionate lovemaking, tucked comfortably into his arms?

Stifling a yawn, she nodded. “Let’s go, then.”

Her soft-spoken reply brought him out of his fantasy to the urgency of the moment. He helped her up onto his horse’s back, then settled into the saddle in front of her. She clasped her arms around his waist. Though he knew she was holding on to him out of necessity, he couldn’t help enjoying the feel of her body so close to his. Her breasts pressed against his back, and despite the layers of fabric separating his skin from hers, he relished the sensation.
