Chapter 6. A Bump in the Night

Merek woke in darkness to the sound of a door closing. For a confused moment, he couldn’t remember where he was. The softness beneath him seemed strange, and the close, velvety warmth somehow sinister, as though he’d been swallowed alive.

Then he woke up enough to remember the big bed and the thick canopy curtains. Ian had rolled away from him in the night, but that was normal. Merek’s body insisted that morning was still far off and he should go back to sleep. He started to drift away. Then Pumpernickel whined, accompanied by the rustle of sliding fabric. The mattress sank a little. Still no trace of light.

“Ian?”

No answer.

Merek reached blindly in the dark and found his lover’s shoulder. Ian’s skin felt cool—not like someone who’d been sleeping in a snug, down bed, but more like someone who’d been up and about in a drafty tower. “Did you get up to piss?” asked Merek muzzily.

Ian mumbled something incoherent. Merek didn’t think he was fully awake. He pulled him close and Ian turned over to put his head on Merek’s chest. One of his feet brushed Merek’s leg—ice cold. It wasn’t long before he was warm again, though, and Merek drifted off with Ian’s hair a tickle under his chin.
