Chapter 13

Ezmira

The rug did nothing to soften the floor. With how sore and tired her body was, it still rebelled against falling asleep in front of the hearth. The heat that felt so good from a distance was too much up close, and Ezmira had to bite back the whine that wanted to escape.

Sitting up, she pushed the hair out of her face, glaring at the lump on the bed that still hadn’t moved. She had no idea how long she’d tossed and turned on the floor, but Quasim slept, unaffected by her discomfort.

She grumbled under her breath. It was her own fault since she’d chosen the floor over lying beside him. He may have kidnapped her, but the sight of his stumps reminded her she couldn’t put him out of his own bed. It would be cruel to demand he give up the comfort for her.

Rolling onto her knees, she stared at the slumbering alpha. He clearly had no intentions for her, or he would have taken one of the many opportunities he’d already had. It wasn’t like she hadn’t shared a bed with a few select troupe mates when they couldn’t afford extra rooms. But none of them were strangers.

Or alphas.

Shaking off the crawling sensation in her limbs, Ezmira pushed to her feet, eyes never leaving Quasim. She slinked closer, hesitating before gingerly placing her weight on the edge of the bed. He didn’t move or give any sign that he was aware of her presence, so she forced herself to relax and pull the blanket over her, careful not to bump the sleeping male. They were both dressed and there were blankets separating them. The worst that could happen would be that he rolled over and squashed her, or she moved and hurt one of his stumps.

It was a few minutes before she could let her eyes drift closed, and even more before the tension left her body, but she was too tired to keep her vigil for long. Slipping away into sleep, she couldn’t help but think what it would be like to share a bed with him every night, his enormous arms locked around her as he purred his contentment in her ear.

She had no clue how long she slept, only that it wasn’t long enough. The fire had burned down and there was a heaviness in the air that made her think it was the early hours before dawn. She didn’t know what had woken her since her body still begged for more rest.

Sighing, she relaxed back onto the pillow until the mattress jolted again. A low growl filled the room, slamming her heart into her throat as images of the building collapsing with them in it filled her head.

Sitting up, Ezmira turned to look at Quasim to see what was wrong, but he had his eyes pinched closed. His head tossed from side to side, mumbled words pouring from his lips as he grimaced in pain.

“Quasim?”

She spoke as softly as she could with her heart threatening to burst from her chest, but he still jerked, legs thrashing.
