Heather had a lot to think about. But she was in a place where thinking with a clear head was impossible. She was smitten. Smitten in that way that teenagers get smitten over that first or second boyfriend. She never really got to go through that when she was younger. She was already dating Norinder by the end of ninth grade. And she was never really ‘smitten’ with Norinder. At the time, he was this really nice guy who was persistent and she never had the heart to reject him. Before she knew it, they were together for two years and she had grown to love him. Two years became four, and their relationship extended into the college years She had completely skipped over the experience of wondering if she would get a second date with a guy. Or if the guy would kiss her. She never got to experience wondering if this new guy would call. And she never felt the worry about whether a guy would reject her.

Now, in her thirties, she was experiencing those things.

That being said, as a teenager you don’t have much else to keep you occupied. Other than school and some social politics, if you weren’t into athletics (she wasn’t) there really wasn’t a lot to distract you. Now, at her age, she had a consulting job and she had children. Plenty of responsibilities. ‘Adulting’.

But Norinder left her to it. He would come home from his job and then hide in his office and dabble in the stock market. Their exchanges these days amounted to her just poking her head into the office and saying goodnight. And then two hours later he would slip into bed with her, and usually be gone in the morning. So her time at home was either with the kids or by herself while the kids played or slept.

She thought about Scott. A lot. And she took to phoning him every day from her office at the other side of the city. Unable to see each other, the two started getting closer on an emotional level. And while she couldn’t take a full afternoon off to get over to his house, she did set aside time the following Friday to meet him halfway – at a restaurant for lunch. The encounter only served to ramp up her arousal. They embraced. They kissed. But that was as far as they could take it, and both of them parted ways feeling quite frustrated sexually.

As time passed, Heather found that her guilt over seeing Scott behind Lynne’s back was fading. Lynne was her friend, but not so close that they spoke every week. Yet she was speaking to Scott daily, and now they had taken to having lunch together on Fridays. She yearned to see him those days – but after seeing him that yearning became unbearable.

It was more than three weeks before Heather was finally able to sneak out of her office at lunch. It was a Tuesday afternoon and she had managed to get ahead of her work enough to leave it for the day.
