Position, omissions, and set expressions

It is possible to use the n-ending to indicate the position of body parts: Li ekfalis la piedojn (kun la piedoj) super la kapon. (He fell head over heels.)

This is as an alternative to another construction using, for example, kun, havante or tenante: Ŝi rifuzis cedi la lokon, (tenante) la piedojn fiksitaj al la planko. (She refused to give way, her feet fixed to the floor.)

Note that if there is an accompanying adjective, it does not take the n-ending. You will read about this ‘object predicative’ later in this unit.

Expressions such as Bonan matenon! and Bonan ŝancon! are understood to be the remaining part of a truncated statement, perhaps Mi deziras al vi ... (I wish you ...). Sometimes it can be hard to imagine what the implied missing part of the sentence might be, not least because Esperanto has always used the n-ending for this, as all learners know from their first lessons: Saluton! Dankon!

2 Identify which words belong in the gaps. In some instances, there are several correct answers. a Mi devos labori __________, kvankam __________ ĝenerale ne estas labortago en mia lando. (sabato, sabato) / (sabaton, sabaton) / (sabaton, sabato) / (sabato, sabaton)
