Chapter Ten

2:00 PM October 31

Constantine crouched behind Rashana’s stool at the throwing wheel, waiting with his back to her. At first, she worried he wouldn’t fit in that position. Thanks to a little impromptu redecorating the two managed to clear enough space not only for his goliath frame, but that vivacious tail too.

Asking him not to wag was like asking Rashana not to decorate: a crime against nature.

Luckily, moving furniture is way easier when you have a supernatural simp with biceps like a holiday ham. If only she had him when she had to set up her classroom. A minute smile fell across her lips as she tried picturing Constantine in her classroom.

She glanced across the room at him. Still on his knees, waiting patiently for her. As he situated himself to better sit on his calves, his wings fanned a bit. Exposing just a little of his ridiculously cute butt. Who knew crouching for a century for the ultimate glute toner?

The graphite, spade-tip of his tail flickered like a rattlesnake’s as she took a step. Her stomach fluttered watching him finally get comfortable. If only everyone could see him this way. The silly, open-minded gentle giant with a heart of gold instead of the leering statue with every urban legend stuck to his back. How quickly would those who feared him change their tune if they knew how long he spent entertaining her cat that morning? If they could witness his undiminished love and appreciation for the world around him–even for those afraid of him?

A peculiar thought flickered in the back of her mind: he truly listened to her all those years. Absorbed her words and held onto them. While he wasn’t sure of the specifics of his slumber nor the extent of his consciousness during it, his memories of her were so damn precious. She thought she simply found a convenient spot with a cool gargoyle statue to verbally process bullshit to.

Instead she found Constantine.

A creature with more love in his heart than even his colossal frame implied. It was overwhelming, really. Like stepping into the sunlight after leaving the movies. It only took a few blinks to adjust, though.

But how many blinks until he disappears?

His tail tapped on the floor and popped her thought bubble. Reminding her of her very eager student and banishing the future’s looming wave of dread.

“Do you need something else, lovely?” Constantine asked, glancing back at her.

She shook her head. “No. Sorry…got distracted. Can you knead the clay a little?” She gestured her chin toward the mound on the table

“Glady.” He replied, turned around, and got to work…which meant pounding his fist into the pile like a tenderizer to a tenderloin.

She turned back toward the wall and her apron. When she reached for it, though, a better idea flickered in her mind. Obviously she didn’t want to risk getting anything on her immaculate silly skeleton shirt. Easiest way to completely remove the risk?

Ditch the shirt.

Rashana peeled out of her tie-dye top, folded it, and placed it on a nearby supply rack.
