Unguarded
âIn the woods,â she sent, relaxing further when he came into sight above the stairs.
He glanced around only briefly before making his way toward her, finding her easily once heâd entered the trees. He squeezed her hand, his eyes scanning the woods, and they moved further from the building before they stopped again.
âThey were holding us on campus,â sent Jemma, catching sight of a familiar railing that finally allowed her to put the pieces of their location together, âin that building over by the nature trails.â
âThe one theyâve been talking about renting out for years?â sent Jack. He shook his head. âAt least we know where we are.â
âWhat about where weâre going? We need food, and we need a safe place to figure things out.â She paused. âAnd Iâd like to let our families know weâre okay.â
âWe can head toward home but not all the way there. Maybe borrow a phone and find a meeting point or something. We need to get started, though.â
Jemma nodded, trying to regain the surge of adrenaline sheâd used to get out of the building just minutes before. âHow do we get there without being found?â
âWeâre on campus?â He ran a hand through his hair. âOkay. We canât go to the nearest roads. By the time we get there, they could know weâre gone, and even if they can only spare a few peopleâ¦â
âItâs not safe,â finished Jemma.
âThe river meets up with the highway, right?â
âIt does,â sent Jemma, âbut not before it meets up with the power plant. We wouldnât exactly blend in.â
Jack made a face. âYouâre right. I think thereâs some other industrial crap further north, too.â He sent a wave of frustration. âWe canât go through campus, and we need to start moving. Letâs go this way while we think.â He started north, away from campus, letting Jemma follow, staying away from the official trails the university had put through the trees. âWe can stay between the river and most of the main roads. Thereâs no way they can spare enough people to even start a search of the woods. Thereâs too much area to cover.â His voice rose and fell as he sorted his thoughts. âIf we can manage on whatever fruit trees we can find in the backyards weâll pass in a couple miles, we should be able to make it to the highway. I donât think theyâll really be able to search there by dark, which is about when weâll make it if we take it easy and keep out of sight, assuming we donât get turned around. The river and highway meet eventually, so we canât mess it up too badly since we have to run into one or the other. Then we hitch a ride with rush-hour traffic headed toward the beach. Sound okay?â
Jemma sent as firm agreement as she could. Did they have much of an alternative? They could hope to find an empty house nearbyâenough of them had been abandoned after the Eventâbut that would be
