CHAPTER TWELVE

Landon

M

y mother walks up to me an hour later. She looks stressed.

“The music artist we booked has cancelled. She’s sick.”

“Oh dear.” I try to be sympathetic.

“It’s okay though. Michelle thinks she can fix it.”

“How?” I wonder out loud.

“Her daughters both sing and play instruments. She’s going to talk them into doing a few songs.”

“I didn’t know Aurora sings.” I smile.

“I imagine there are a lot of things you’ve yet to learn about her, son.”

At that moment, I notice movement on the stage. There she is at the piano. Her sister says something to her and then she’s playing. Silence descends around the function hall as they hear the beautiful melody her fingers are creating.

I’m awestruck.

She’s not looking at the crowd, but I desperately want her to look at me and then she sings and I can barely breathe because her words destroy me; literally destroys me.

She looks at me then and I know she means what she’s singing and that scares me, but more than it scares me, it hurts me, because I realise that I’ve really fucked it all up and I’ve hurt her and I think she might be saying goodbye to me.

But her closing words give me hope… “I can’t lose you.”

I make my way towards the stage. I need to talk to her. I leave Abby behind me somewhere. But I’m not quick enough. She’s not on the stage when I get there. I search everywhere for her. But I can’t find her. I desperately need to find her. I need to tell her… I need to tell her I’m sorry.

I call Abby from my car.

“Abs. So sorry to have abandoned you.”

“It’s alright. Are you okay?”

“Yeah.” I’m sitting in the back of my limo, tapping my fingers impatiently on the frame of the door. “I’ll send Henry back for you shortly.”

“Thank you,” she says before I hang up.
