The Question of Justification

An end which requires unjustified means is no justifiable end.1

The end can morally justify the means only if the means does not morally disqualify the end.2

Ordinarily,… both end and means come bundled together with the envelope of what we do.3

All of the foregoing comments about means raise questions of justification: Is the pursuit of particular ends justified? Is the use of a particular means justified? Is the use of a particular means justified in relation to a particular end? As the epigraphical quotations indicate, these questions are not questions of causal efficacy. Rather, they address deeply normative concerns.

I shall first offer some general comments on the nature of justification and then review the debate between those who argue that the ends can justify the means and those who reject such a claim. I shall suggest that the debate is sometimes stalemated by the failure to recognize that simple answers overlook a complexity of considerations that have to be taken into account.
