NICHOLE HAINES
I was standing inside the black cube. I couldnât see anything, but it felt like a real room to me. The only thing that seemed off was the fact that there wasnât any light at all. It didnât feel dark or gloomy, just different from what Iâd grown up with. Maybe itâs supposed to be dark and mysterious? But my eyes were adjusting, so maybe not. âHello?â I called out into the silence.
âWho is this?â A womanâs voice came back to me. It sounded familiar, but I couldnât place it. âWhere are you calling from?â
âUhâ¦â I looked around for something to point at. There was nothing in sight. âOutside.â
The woman chuckled. âThatâs not going to work,â she said. âYouâre in a simulation, so your senses arenât functioning properly yet.â
Wait⦠What? She can hear me?
âWhat do you mean?â
âJust tell me where you are,â the woman told me. âIâll find you.â
How did she know who I am? Or how could she even hear me over this distance? This was unbelief-
âThere!â She pointed toward the wall of the cube. I followed her finger until I saw a small dot moving slowly across the wall. The dot turned into a man. He was wearing a white lab coat and had a pair of glasses on his face. âHere you go.â
He walked right through the wall, which made me wonder if he was some kind of ghost. Then he started walking toward me. I backed away.
But then he stopped in front of me. His eyes widened when they fell upon me. âHoly shit!â he exclaimed. âItâs you! I thought you were dead!â

A smile spread across my face. âHey, Gabe. How have you been?â
Gabe took off his glasses and rubbed his eyes. âOh, man. You donât know how good it is to see you again. Where are we?â
âIn a simulation,â I replied.
âYeah, yeah. Thatâs fine. Just make sure you get out soon. Weâve got work to do.â
âWe do?â I asked.
âWell, yeah,â Gabe said. âI think you might be able to help us figure out what happened to me.â
âOkayâ¦â
âAnd we need to get back to our bodies. Iâm getting tired of being trapped here.â
I nodded. âYeah. I understand.â
âGood. Because I think you might be able to help me get back to my body. But first things first: Letâs get you out of this simulation.â
âHow are we going to do that?â
âEasy. Just follow me.â Gabe started walking down the hallway.
***
After a few minutes, I noticed a door ahead of us. I hadnât seen it before. It must have opened while I was talking to Gabe.
âWhatâs behind this door?â I asked.
âMy bedroom,â he answered. âI think I left my phone there.â
âLetâs go check.â
Gabe walked into the room and started looking around. After a moment, he came back to me. âNothing.â
âMaybe you should look harder.â
Gabe shook his head. âNo way. Iâm not messing with this stuff anymore.â
âWhat do you mean?â
He shrugged. âLook, I used to mess around with VR simulations a lot. When I was younger, I had this whole setup in my basement.
