What makes matters even worse is that he receives no response. The Father’s abandonment of his Son at the moment of his death is complete and total. Jesus receives no consolation whatsoever. God has abandoned him to humanity’s fate. Jesus suffers in our place and has felt the full weight of humanity’s separation from God. This deep spiritual isolation from the Father was Jesus’ descent into hell, that is, the state of eternal separation from God. Jesus entered that state on our behalf. By bonding his humanity to us, he accepted our fate as his own. Because he was God, what would have been an eternity for us lasted but a single moment: “With the Lord one day is like a thousand years and a thousand years like one day” (2 Peter 3:8).
