Questions That Support Transfer Learning.

Encouraging students to imagine how academic concepts and skills can be utilized to solve real problems or create new designs feeds motivation and engagement. The intersection of deep knowing with an opportunity to use the knowledge in a novel manner contributes to the thrill of learning. As students are drawn into this level of learning, they are able to reinforce surface knowledge (by further consolidating understandings) and deepen knowledge (for example, by investigating possible relationships). Why do I need to know this? can be the most powerful of all student questions because it can serve to nurture interest and inspire deeper learning. The sample prompts and stems in Figure 4.3 are a simple “starter kit” for instigating student thinking about possibilities for transfer. Transfer questions can generate sparks that fire student imagination and transport them to the realm of curiosity and exploration that will be the focus of Chapter 5.
